In Congress, Price's priorities are combating the high cost of energy, lowering taxes, stopping illegal immigration, and providing patient-centered health care.
Health Care:
Health care plays a critical role in the daily lives of Americans.
And as a doctor for more than 25 years, I saw firsthand the impact on
my patients. In today's system, patients are often
told which treatments are permissible or which doctors they may see.
This is putting our most personal decisions in the hands of bureaucrats
or insurance companies rather than doctors and patients.
In Congress, I have introduced a plan to make health care affordable
and accessible for every American. It also puts doctors and patients
back in control of health care decisions.
It does not put Washington in control. Instead, it alters incentives to
contain costs and ensures it makes financial sense for all Americans to
be insured. By restoring the power of patient choice, we can return the
system to one that is responsive, innovative, and of the highest
quality. Economy and Jobs: In order to keep America competitive in the 21st century, Congress
needs to foster an economic climate that helps U.S. industries expand
opportunities, hire new employees, and invest in research and
development. This cannot happen if American businesses remain mired in
regulation, litigation, and taxation.
As a key Member of the House Education and Labor Committee, I have
fought back attempts to increase unnecessary regulatory burdens on
business. I pushed to reform our court system and end frivolous
lawsuits. And I have voted time and time again to target tax breaks
toward small businesses for research and development and expansion.
It has been my experience that the most positive economic outcomes are
produced when the government sets fair rules then stands aside and
allows businesses the economic freedom to provide opportunities. This
is the course that will keep America prosperous and job creation
abundant.
Energy: Families are making tough choices every
day because of high prices at the pump. We need to secure America's
energy future now by setting a course that will make us energy
self-sufficient in both the short and long-term.
It starts by promoting new and clean alternative sources of energy,
granting a broad array of incentives to find the "energy source of the
future" whether it is wind, solar, biomass, or whatever American
ingenuity can enterprise.
Next is conservation. By providing inducements for conservation and
greater efficiency, we can ease demand for gasoline and other fossil
fuels now.
And finally, we need more American-made energy for Americans. The
United States has bountiful natural resources that are currently off
limits to exploration and production. It is time to bring these
resources online to reduce dependence on foreign sources of energy.
In the end, energy policy should be defined by what we will do, not
what we will not do. Taking steps to successfully tackle our energy
needs will help families cope with runaway gas prices and ensure
continued economic prosperity. Cutting Taxes: Did you know there are more than two million words in the entire federal tax code? It comes as no surprise to most Americans that our tax system is
overly burdensome and complex. Even worse, the current tax code
discourages ingenuity, restricts economic growth, and punishes savings. In order to truly reform the tax system we must change it from the
core. It is why I am a proponent of the FairTax, a common sense way to
overhaul the tax code. The FairTax replaces all federal income taxes -
eliminating the need for the IRS - with a national retail sales tax.
The solution is simple, fair, and completely voluntary. Even better,
Americans gain control of their earnings, not the government. Beyond broad tax reform, we also need to maintain current tax breaks
for low and middle-income Americans, permanently extend tax cuts on
capital gains and dividends, and eliminate the "Death Tax." Education: Education is the cornerstone of every child’s development. This
foundation of learning must continue to be built on the local control
of schools that empowers parents and school districts to make the best
decisions for their children, not the federal government. Bringing
accountability, flexibility, and choice to our schools are vital to
achieving results in our classrooms. The status quo arguments made by those who have never taught in our
classrooms have only hindered our abilities to reform education. Simply
put, the status quo when it comes to public education is unacceptable.
We cannot settle for mediocre results from our teachers or from our
students. I recognize the need to have highly qualified teachers in our
classrooms. Teachers that do more than just teach students, but those
who reach students to help them achieve their potential. To attract
these types of teachers and improve teacher retention rates I created
the - “Teacher Incentive Fund,” which establishes performance-based
compensation for teachers who improve student achievement in high-needs
schools. Education is a tool and foundation that everyone deserves an
opportunity to attain. The cost of a college education should not be an
obstacle for those who want to pursue a higher degree. This past year,
I co-sponsored the College 529 Invest in Education Savings for Tomorrow
Act. Georgia’s 529 plans have allowed thousands of hard-working
families to save for their child’s education tax-free. Providing this
type of opportunity to those who have the desire to attend college is
something we must protect. Immigration: Citizens across the United States are fed up with widespread illegal
immigration, and it is no longer an isolated problem for border states.
Overcrowded schools, over-extended social services, and strained
hospitals are bearing the brunt, and lawful taxpayers are left picking
up the tab.
In Congress, I have made a commitment to securing our borders,
improving enforcement of current immigration laws, assisting local law
enforcement, and denying "amnesty" to illegal aliens in the United
States. A bold course of action needs to be taken to regain the trust
of the American people. Without it, we cannot begin to get a handle on
the problem.Family & Values: While in Congress, I have worked to ensure that the family and our
common values are a top priority. A strong family unit is one that
cannot be underestimated. I authored the "Protecting Our Children Act" to protect our children
from child predators by making improvements to the national sex
offender registration program. When I came to Congress, I took an oath to “support and defend” the
Constitution. Today, that oath is being put to the test by our courts
who believe the phrase “under god” doesn’t belong in the Constitution.
This strikes at the core of our rights and liberties, and the courts,
in this instance, have overstepped their boundaries. This is not only
unsettling, but an abuse of judicial review. I have co-sponsored the
"Pledge Protection Act" to guarantee that our federal courts do not
overstep their role in this matter.
